Households advised to check early if they qualify for £150 Warm Home Discount rebate

The Warm Home Discount, a one-off payment towards electricity costs, is increasing from £140 to £150 for 2022-23.
The scheme is funded by participating energy suppliers and is designed to help people who need it most. The money comes off your energy bill between October and March, rather than being paid directly into your bank account. If you’re on a prepayment meter, you’ll get the £150 as credit on your meter.
If you receive certain income-based benefits or pension credit, you might be eligible for the Warm Home Discount.
People in the Core Group – electricity customers (or their partner) who are in receipt of the Pension Credit Guarantee Credit on the qualifying date of 21st August 2022 - will be sent a letter between November 2022 and January 2023 at the latest. This will confirm that you are eligible for an automatic rebate or advise you to call a helpline to check if you are eligible. The deadline for calling the helpline to claim the rebate is 28th February 2023.

The helpline is available for Core Group customers only. If you think you are eligible under the Core Group and have not received a letter by mid-January 2023 but you think you should be eligible, please check https://www.gov.uk/the-warm-home-discount-scheme, which will include information on how to contact the helpline.

People in the Broader Group - low-income and vulnerable customers who don’t qualify for the Core Group - will still need to apply for the rebate by applying to energy suppliers’ schemes. You should contact your supplier as soon as your supplier launches the Broader Group Scheme, which is due to be Monday, 14th November.
Energy suppliers may set their own additional eligibility criteria for the Broader Group, subject to approval by Ofgem. Please note eligibility may change depending on which supplier you are with. You will need to check with your energy supplier the eligibility criteria they use and how to apply for a rebate. You may need to apply this year even if you applied and received a rebate last year.
The number of discounts suppliers are obligated to give is limited. Check with your supplier as early as possible to see if you’re eligible and how to apply, even if you were eligible for a discount last year. Your electricity supplier decides who can get the discount and they will confirm if your application was successful.
Energy suppliers will apply the Warm Home Discount rebate no later than 31st March 2023.
As VAT on energy bills is calculated separately, the rebate may appear on your bill as £142.86. The net impact on your overall bill will still be £150.
Any tenants with questions around the Warm Home Discount, or other energy usage or billing issues, can contact Robert Leslie, Energy Officer, on 01856 875253 ext. 404 or by email on robert.leslie@ohal.org.uk
