GDPR - the New General Data Protection Regulations

News image

What do you need to know?

The GDPR replace the Data Protection Act 1998 on 25 May 2018. Although similar to the previous Data Protection Act, the new GDPR creates some new rights for individuals and strengthens some of the previous rights to ensure your personal data is secure, accurate and up-to-date.

The GDPR requires that organisations must be transparent about how they collect data, what they do with it, how it is processed, how long it is retained and that they must be clear in explaining this. OHAL’s Fair Processing Notices are available in the “Privacy, GDPR & Cookie Statement” at the bottom of our website.

You have a right to access the personal data we hold on you to ensure it is accurate, relevant and kept up to date by making a subject access request, which can be made verbally or in writing. You also have the right to request that data be rectified if it is found to be incorrect or incomplete. You can also request that your data is deleted under certain circumstances, particularly if it is no longer necessary for the purpose for which it was collected. This is known as the “right to be forgotten”.

If you have any queries please contact our Head of Corporate Governance. Further information can also be obtained from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) website at ico.org.uk.
